What are Microgreens?
Microgreens are, in essence, densely planted ‘seedling’ versions of all your favourite vegetables and herbs like Basil, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cress, Kale, Mustard, Peas, Radish, Rocket and many, many more. When you plant this seed, it grows through stages from sprout, to microgreen, to baby leaf and then onto fully grown adult plant. Sprouts are the stage just post germination when the little root has emerged and the cotyledons have just started development. They are typically half a centimeter to a centimeter in size. Microgreens are the next growth stage and have fairly well developed roots and fully developed cotyledons (if you remember your school biology, cotyledons are those first little leaves to develop, before the true leaves emerge). Microgreens range in size from about 4-8cm. The next growth stage is baby leaf which occurs post cotyledon with emergence and then full development of the first true leaves. These can be anything from 6cm and taller. From baby leaf they continue to develop into the fully grown adult plant with which we are all so familiar.
At Grow Mo’, our focus is on sprouts and microgreens because the earlier you catch them, the more nutrient-dense and healthy they are for you.
Our “Pure Greens”
We grow pure punnets of microgreens e.g. a pure punnet of Tatsoi Mustard, or Chinese Cabbage, or Basil, or Cress. You can also choose from Broccoli, Radish, Rocket, Kale, Curly Blue Kale, Peas, Purple Kohlrabi, Black Mustard, Yellow Mustard, Mizuna Mustard and more…
Our “Mixed Greens”
We have flavour offerings which include a mix of pure greens in one punnet. You can choose from our Salad Mix, Health Mix, Mild Mix, or our Spicy Mix.
We grow bulk trays of microgreens to order for chefs and caterers too. A tray holds 20 separate punnets and you can choose from 1 to 5 different varieties to fill your tray. There is a minimum limit of 4 punnets per variety selected, so, for example you could order 4 Radish 10 Salad Mix and 6 Pea Shoots. Or if you chose 5 different varieties, you would get 4 punnets of each. As these trays are grown to order, orders must be received at least 10 days in advance of required delivery date, and if you require Peas Shoots or Basil, we need at least 15 days advance warning. Regular orders from the Johannesburg area can be delivered on Tuesdays or Fridays. Pretoria deliveries can be done on Saturday mornings. Occasional orders must be collected from the farm in Greenside by arrangement during the week, or from any of our market locations around Gauteng on the weekends.
If you don’t have the required ‘green fingers’, or are simply short of time and/or patience to sprout for yourself, then we will happily grow our delicious and super healthy Broccoli Sprouts for you. We will only accept repeat weekly orders, one month in advance. Sprouts need to be collected from the farm in Greenside by arrangement on a weekly basis, or from any of our market locations around Gauteng on the weekends.
Get creative and make up your own special microgreen mix from our current product offering, and we will custom grow it for you.
We can in fact grow most of the Brassicae plant varieties. So if it is not already in our range, you specify which green you would like, and if we can source the seed, we can try and grow it for you.
